Parkside Victoria Resort & Spa is donating the use of its fitness centre and private HD movie theatre to the Victoria Cycling Academy to help sharpen the young cyclists' competitive edge during the off-season.

The academy's development team members, mostly in their mid-teens, are using the facilities to maintain form, core strength and flexibility at a time when limited daylight hours make it hard to get on the bike after school.

Demand is high for indoor training facilities over the winter, which makes it difficult for groups like the academy to gain regular access, said head coach Steve Lund.

“Having this facility to use is a huge benefit to the academy and our programs,” said Lund, who has coached many of his athletes to Olympic, World, Pan American and National Championship gold medals.

“We want to make sure any weight training is very well supervised and the Parkside gym is perfect for this as there is a good mix of machines and free weights.”

Aviawest Resort Group, which owns and manages six properties in British Columbia, has been a big supporter of Victoria's cycling scene for more than a decade. CEO Jim Pearson helped found both the Aviawest Cycling Club and the Aviawest Cycling Society, a not-for-profit organization supporting young cyclists.

The society contributes to the annual Bastion Square Grand Prix, one of the biggest cycling events on Vancouver Island. The event provides a hometown race for Victoria Cycling Academy riders and showcases the speed, thrill and excitement while attracting more young cyclists to the sport.

“Over the past five years, thanks to the involvement of Aviawest, we have seen numerous riders start cycling with us, get into racing and then go on to win Provincial and National Championships,” said Lund.

Already, four riders have represented Canada at World Championships and are racing on professional teams with the goal of competing in the Tour de France.

“If it was not for Jim's support I know these riders would not be where they are today as they have all been provided with many more training and racing opportunities thanks to Aviawest.”
